I just thought I'd update my blog with this new royalty free illustration which is available to buy now from iStock.

New style update

After getting a little bit of spare time recently, I was able to start looking at evolving this new style I mentioned a few weeks back.

I have had a bit of a play around with some sketches, but have just uploaded a first attempt of an illustration for people to buy on iStock. You can download it by clicking here

I am not completely happy with the style yet, but I feel it is moving in the right direction. I was aiming for total simplicity, yet a bold definition to the style and I think it is getting there.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks as always!

Dan

You're probably not interested, but...

I was working on a project for a client the other day and thought it may be of interest to some people to upload a few stages of how I go about working out an illustration.

I know some people don't care, but I must admit I am a bit of geek when it comes to seeing how people develop their sketches into the final concept.

I won't bore you with the ins and outs of it, but I just thought I'd unload the initial scamp, first sketch and then final illustration.

Here is the first scamp which I normally do whilst flicking through the net when I am referencing certain elements for the illustration.

Once I am happy with the composition I will then work up the first sketch. For this illustration, I produced it in two parts. For the iMac and then the sketch of the character. I just did this so that it was easier for me to artwork the character once signed off.

Finally, once the illustration is signed off I will artwork the final design and here it is...

Messina Wildlife Characters

These last few weeks I have been lucky enough to be involved with Messina Wildlife Management, creating a variety of characters for their Pest Control company.

I am still working on the project, but thought I would post some of the latest designs, which include an Armadillo, snake and mouse.

New Year, New Style...

Hmmm... Well maybe that title is a little harsh when I say new style, but for the last few months I have contemplated having a separate style to the one I currently have which is a little more 'minimalis' shall we say.

It is not that I am getting bored with my current style (or that I am infact just being lazy), but I just wanted to experiment with the idea of creating characters which are made of simple shapes, very few colours and with no shading or depth to them.

I really love strong defined lines and solid blocks of colour in artwork and I suppose this development was inevitable.

In the coming months I am planning on creating a few illustrations to sell on iStock and see how they are received.

As soon as they are available I will let you all know.

Until then, I have enclosed a very early sketch of the style (though I do plan on simplifying it some more).

It certainly isn't a million miles away from the way I am working now, but I don't see this as replacing my current style at all. I just want to have another way of portraying my ideas and I think this could be the avenue to go down.

Speak soon!

Getty Images

Some of you may already know, but last year I was accepted to submit my illustrations to Getty Images.

This is obviously a huge honour, as Getty are one of the largest stock libraries in the world and are a name which is known and respected globally. But personally I have struggled to find the time to continue to upload to iStock as well as continue in my main career as a graphic designer, and so I have never had the time to submit a single image.

Though luck would have it that this year iStock will be making some of my current iStock portfolio available across both companies which is amazing news.

I don't know too much on this at the mo, but I will update you with any extra news as soon as I hear it!
